.NET Legacy Modernisation — Omniga
Migration of a heterogeneous application landscape from .NET Framework 4.6 to .NET 8.0 — zero downtime, significantly reduced technical debt, and a unified platform for internal systems and SaaS products.
The client
Omniga GmbH & Co. KG is a multi-brand company and, with over 25 years of experience in the digital business, counts among the largest IT companies in Regensburg.
Starting point
Omniga operated a heterogeneous application landscape based on .NET Framework 4.6 for years. This consisted of several business-critical applications, including:
- Internal systems automating central business processes
- Customer-facing SaaS platforms actively used by external customers
The applications were functionally stable but technologically obsolete and organically grown over time. This created typical legacy challenges across the enterprise:
- Outdated runtime with limited support
- High technical debt across multiple systems
- Tight coupling between applications and infrastructure
- Impaired maintainability and further development
- Rising operational and maintenance costs
- Increasing security and compliance risks
Modernisation was necessary to position the entire application landscape as maintainable, secure, and future-proof for the long term.
Objectives
The project wasn’t about modernising individual applications in isolation but about a strategic renewal of the entire software foundation. Central objectives:
- Migration of all relevant applications from .NET Framework 4.6 to .NET 8.0
- Unified technological basis for internal systems and SaaS platforms
- Preservation of existing business logic and processes
- Minimisation of functional and operational risks
- Reduction of technical debt across all systems
- Creation of a stable foundation for future extensions
Approach
Rather than a risky big-bang rewrite, we chose a structured, incremental modernisation approach prioritising control, transparency, and stability.
1. Analysis of the application landscape
- Cross-system analysis of all relevant applications
- Assessment of technical dependencies and critical interfaces
- Identification of common patterns, legacy burdens, and risks
2. Definition of a unified target architecture
- Migration to .NET 8.0 as a common platform
- Standardisation of project structures, build, and deployment processes
- Introduction of clear architecture and dependency boundaries
- Preparation for modern operational and scaling concepts
3. Incremental delivery
- Prioritised application migration by criticality
- Refactoring of incompatible APIs and framework dependencies
- Modernisation of CI/CD pipelines for all systems
- Assurance of ongoing operation of internal processes and SaaS platforms
This approach enabled controlled transformation of the entire system landscape without disrupting business operations.
Technology focus
- .NET 8.0
- Modern C# language features
- Unified, maintainable architecture principles
- Automated builds, tests, and deployments
- Future-proof API and integration structures
- Enhanced security standards through the current runtime
Outcome
- Successful modernisation of the entire application landscape
- No downtime for customer-facing SaaS platforms
- Stable continued operation of all internal systems
- Significantly reduced technical debt
- Improved performance, stability, and maintainability
- Unified technological basis for future development
Omniga now has a modern, consolidated software landscape that reliably supports both internal processes and external customer platforms.
